Dover Castle (Dover)

Dover Castle is one of the most famous castles in England, and stands on the White Cliffs in the ancient port of Dover in Kent.

It began when the Romans built a fort to protect the narrow sea crossing from what is now France. They also built two lighthouses here to guide their fleets safely into harbour. One of the lighthouses still stands within the castle walls.

The present Norman castle was completed in the 1180s, and was strengthened and modified over the centuries, particularly as a response to possible invasion during the Napoleonic Wars.

There is a vast network of tunnels, and it was here that Vice Admiral Ramsey set up his headquarters to mastermind the evacuation from Dunkirk in 1940.
