St. Marys Church (Derby)
St. Marys is an impressive Catholic church in Derby.
The church stands in Bridge Gate, close to the city centre, which is dominated by its tall spire. It is reached from the centre by a footbridge across a busy road.
St. Marys was the first large parish church created by the prolific and brilliant Augustus Pugin, and was completed in 1838.
When it opened, there was considerable feeling among Anglicans that their colleagues who had attended the opening had acted sinfully by so doing.
The architects son, E. W. Pugin, extended the church in 1855 by adding a Lady Chapel.
