Deal Castle (Deal)

Deal Castle is an impressive castle on the Kent coast at Deal.

It was one of the castles built by Henry VIII around 1540 as a defence against possible attacks from France.

It has a dry moat surrounding six semicircular bastions, and within these are six smaller bastions. From a top storey more guns could be fired. There was also an oven for heating cannonballs, which had a devastating effect on wooden ships.

In 1648, during the Civil War, Deal and the neighbouring castles of Sandown and Walmer were fortified by the Royalists but eventually taken by Colonel Rich of the Parliamentarian army.

The castle is now in the care of English Heritage.
