St. Cuthbert`s Church (Darlington)
St. Cuthbert`s is the impressive parish church of Darlington in County Durham.
It was begun in the 1180s by Bishop Puiset of Durham as a college. The nave and aisles were complete by the 1240s, and it was then not added to throughout the mediaeval period.
There is a fine West front with arcading, reached by a cobbled avenue. Above the tower is a soaring needle spire.
There was a sensitive restoration in the 1860s by George Gilbert Scott.
