St. John the Evangelist Hospital (Cirencester)
St. John the Evangelist Hospital is an intersting survival in the ancient market town of Cirencester.
It is situated in Spitalgate Lane, just around the corner from Gloucester Street.
Today all that remains are four pairs of open arches covered by a roof.
The hospital was founded in 1133 by Henry I to provide food for passing travellers and a home for Cirencester`s destitiute.
It later became attached to the powerful Cirencester Abbey, but fell into ruins after the Dissolution of the Monasteries.
Next door are 18th century almshouses, built to replace the hospital.
