Market Square (Chester)

The Market Square is an important focal point in the ancient city of Chester.

It lies roughly halfway along Northgate Street, one of the four Roman streets, running from the High Cross to the Northgate.

Chester's unique architectural feature, The Rows, stops just short of the Market Square.

On the East side of the square is the Abbey Gateway, entrance to the Abbey in mediaeval times, and now one of the entrances to Chester Cathedral.

Opposite is the Town Hall, opened by the Prince of Wales, later Edward VII, in 1869. Next door is an indoor market.

In the centre of the pedestrianised square is a sculpture by Stephen Broadbent, entitled "A Celebration of Chester". Three intertwined figures represent protection, industry and thanksgiving.

Nearby is a group of Roman pillars and capitals.
