Chester Castle (Chester)
Chester Castle is situated in the historic city of Chester.
An important Roman town, Chester has retained most of its mediaeval walls, although these have been repaired and rebuilt on a fairly regular basis.
The Anglo-Saxon settlers strengthened the Roman defences, and the Normans built a motte and bailey castle.
The only surviving remnant of the mediaeval castle is Agricola`s Tower, built in the 12th century.
What is now known as Chester Castle consists of a gateway, military quarters and assize courts. The Cheshire Military Museum displays colours, standards and regimentalia.
