Hylands (Chelmsford)

Hylands is a big house in the Essex county town of Chelmsford.

It is situated in the Widford area of the town.

Hylands was built in the 1720s for Sir John Comyns, and was then seven bays wide and two and a half storeys high.

In the 1820s a giant Ionic portico was added by William Atkinson, along with a pair of one storey wings.

Today the house and gardens are in the ownership of the local authority, and used as a public park with a variety of events.
