Key House (Castle Donington)
Key House is an attractive timber-framed house in the small Leicestershire town of Castle Donington.
It is situated in the High Street, which unusually is not in the present town centre, but leading away from it towards Breedon-on-the-Hill.
There are various dates on the side of the house, including 1595 and 1636, and by each date is a key.
The story is that a local man built the house for himself and his bride, but before the marriage she changed her mind and left him. Heartbroken, he completed the house and left a key for her to find when she returned to him. Sadly, she never did.
Later owners of the house have continued the tradition.
