Greyfriars (Canterbury)
The Greyfriars is the remains of a former friary in Canterbury.
It is situated off Stour Street.
A picturesque survival, it is a small, rectangular and steeply gabled Early English building that straddles the River Stour on two pairs of pointed arches.
The surviving building was probably the warden`s lodge.
The Franciscan friars reached England in 1224, five years after being established by St. Francis, and five settled in Canterbury. This new site was purchased for them in 1267.
