Auckland Castle (Bishop Auckland)
Auckland Castle is a surviving castle at Bishop Auckland, and is still the residence of the Bishop of Durham.
It was built by Bishop Puiset in the 12th century, and was used from then on by the Prince Bishops.
The castle was rebuilt by Wyatt, and has a great hall which is now used as the chapel, while off the throne room is a private chapel with wood panelling.
Originally the castle had a stone curtain wall.
There is an 18th century deer shelter in the grounds.
