Bull Statue (Birmingham)
The Bull Statue stands in the heart of the Bull Ring shopping development in the giant Midlands city of Birmingham.
The bull represents the original use of the area. This was the centre of Birmingham when it was simply a market town in the pre-Industrial Revolution era. Specifically, the Cattle Market was nearby.
The practice of bull-baiting, barbarous to our eyes today, was also carried out here. The butchers said it gave a more tender quality to the meat.
