Writtle
Writtle is a pretty village in Essex, 2 miles from Chelmsford, of which it is now almost a suburb.
It has a most attractive village green with a pond, and is close to the River Wid. The green is surrounded by Georgian and older houses.
All Saints Church dates in part from the 13th century and has a fine collection of brasses. Its tower collapsed in 1800 and was rebuilt.
Marconi broadcast the world`s first radio entertainment programme from a hut at Writtle in 1922.
Earthworks known locally as King John`s Castle have yielded traces of buildings from the 13th century.
Essex Agricultural College is at Writtle.
Writtle was the birthplace of Robert the Bruce, Robert I of Scotland.
