Wirksworth
Wirksworth is a small market town in Derbyshire, in the Peak District and 4 miles from Matlock.
The large cruciform St. Mary`s Church dates back to the 13th century, and contains an Anglo-Saxon coffin lid.
Elizabeth Evans, aunt of the novelist George Eliot, is buried in the churchyard. Wirksworth appears in the guise of Snowfield in "Adam Bede".
The sloping Market Place is picturesque, and in one of the lanes leading off it is the excellent Heritage Centre.
Just outside the town is the National Stone Centre, which gives an idea of some of the many uses of stone. Wirksworth was also an important lead mining centre.
