St. Mary`s Church (Wirksworth)

St. Mary`s is the parish church of the little town of Wirksworth in Derbyshire.

Large, grand and cruciform, with a central tower, it dates back to the 13th century. George Gilbert Scott gave it a restoration in the 1870s.

There is an outstanding Anglo-Saxon coffin lid, with eight scenes from the life of Christ.

Around the walls are many carvings, including one known as "the old man", showing a miner carrying his pick. It is one of only two mediaeval depictions of this type of work, the other being at Newland in Gloucestershire.

In the churchyard is buried Elizabeth Evans, aunt of the novelist George Eliot.
