Rotherham

Rotherham is a town in South Yorkshire, at the confluence of the River Rother and the River Don, and 6 miles from Sheffield.

The Romans worked iron here and had a fort at Templeborough. The town`s modern development is due largely to mining and engineering.

All Saints Church dates back to the 15th century, on the site of an Anglo-Saxon church, and has a lofty crocketed spire.

The Chapel of Our Lady, on Rotherham Bridge, was built in the 15th century, and is one of only four bridge chapels remaining in England. Before being reconsecrated, it acted as almshouse, prison and tobacconist`s shop.

Clifton Park Museum is housed in Clifton House, which was designed by John Carr of York and built in 1782.

Prominent people born at Rotherham include Donald Bailey, inventor of the Bailey bridge; and David Seaman, England footballer.
