Pleshey

Pleshey is a pretty village in Essex, 5 miles from Chelmsford.

It nestles within the erthworks of the outer bailey of the Norman Pleshey Castle. No buildings remain, but the motte rises to 50 feet and is reached by a 14th century bridge, beleived to be the oldest brick bridge in Britain.

There is a little garden, giving views across the castle moat.

Holy Trinity Church is a 19th century replacement for a mediaeval chapel built by Thomas of Woodstock, Duke of Gloucester, who was later abducted at Pleshey on the orders of Richard II, taken to Leigh and shipped thence to Calais, where he was murdered.
