Middlesbrough
Middlesbrough is a large industrial town in Cleveland, formerly Yorkshire, and 14 miles from Darlington.
It stands on the estuary of the River Tees, and has iron, steel and petrochemical works in addition to extensive docks.
Middlesbrough was a tiny village until 1830, from which date is has grown enormously.
Middlesbrough Cathedral, the red brick St. Mary`s, is a Catholic cathedral, built in 1872.
St. Hilda`s Church, built in 1840, has a Norman font, rescued from a farmyard.
The best known feature of Middlesbrough is the amazing transporter bridge, constructed in 1911 over the Tees. It can carry 10 vehicles and 600 passengers in its travelling cable car.
The vertical lift Newport Bridge was built in 1934.
