Great Wakering
Great Wakering is a village in South East Essex, 2 miles from Shoeburyness.
It is the last village in Essex that can be freely visited in that direction. Foulness Island and the other associated islands, are a little to the East, but are under the control of the Ministry of Defence, and only authorised persons can go there.
Great Wakering's main claim to fame is that it is the driest place in the United Kingdom, with less than 20 inches average annual rainfall.
St. Nicholas' Church is at the end of the long High Street. It has an extraordinary two-storeyed building added to the West end.
Blue Badge Guide Colin Crosby is available to lead Guided Walks around Great Wakering for groups.
