Eastbourne

Eastbourne is a genteel seaside resort on the Sussex coast, in the shelter of Beachy Head, 70 miles from London.

The first guide book to the town was published in 1793, but development did not get properly underway until 1851, under the direction of the Duke of Devonshire.

Old Eastbourne is a mile inland, with the 12th century St. Mary`s Church, timber framed 13th century Lamb Inn and 16th century Rectory.

The Towner Art Gallery is housed in the 18th century manor house.

A Martello Tower is now known as the Wish Tower, and houses a small museum.

Another fortification, the Redoubt, now has a number of attractions including a model village and aquarium.

There are plenty of fine parks, gardens and flower beds.

Prominent people born at Eastbourne include Angela Carter, novelist; and Michael Fish, TV weather forecaster.

Eastbourne features in the song "The Laughing Gnome", by David Bowie ("I put him on a train to Eastbourne, carried his bag and gave him a fag"), and the song "Eastbourne Ladies" by Kevin Coyne ("Nobody seems to care if you flash your underwear").

Blue Badge Guide Colin Crosby is available to lead Guided Walks around Eastbourne for groups.
