Barnsley

Barnsley is an industrial town in South Yorkshire, 12 miles from Sheffield, and on the River Dearne. Its prosperity was founded largely on coal.

St. Mary`s Church dates back to about 1300. The tower is 15th century.

The Town Hall was built in 1933, using Portland stone.

The Cooper Gallery, in the 17th century Old Grammar School, contains English watercolours.

The large Market Place is the original site where markets have been held since 1249.
