Ancaster

Ancaster is a village in Lincolnshire, 5 miles from Sleaford.

It was a Roman town, named Causennae, on Ermine Street, and was thus linked directly with London, Lincoln and York. It is believed that chariot races took place in the long valley.

The durable Ancaster limestone, much admired in buildings, especially mediaeval churches, comes from here.

The parish church incorporates some Norman work. Displayed outside are copies of small statues of fertility goddesses from the Roman period, while inside is a museum devoted to the Roman town.

Blue Badge Guide Colin Crosby is available to lead Guided Walks around Ancaster for groups.
