Stage and Screen (A Guided Walk in Leicester)

“Stage and Screen” is a Guided Walk devised and led by the well-known Blue Badge Guide Colin Crosby, of Colin Crosby Heritage Tours.

These strolls are an excellent way of soaking up some Local History.

This walk starts outside the Town Hall in Leicester City Centre.

As the title implies, it is a look at the cinemas and theatres around the City Centre – both those still operating today, and others which were open long ago.

Colin himself spent many years managing cinemas and theatres, mostly in London and the South of England. In the 1970s, however, he was Manager of the Town Hall at Loughborough.

Among the buildings still operating are the Haymarket Theatre, City Cinema and Little Theatre, as well as the Athena, which was until a few years ago the Odeon.

Colin also discusses the theatre where Bizet’s “Carmen” was first performed in England; the music hall where Joseph Merrick, the tragic Elephant Man, exhibited himself; and the hotel which had a cinema on the first floor.

The walk should be fascinating to anybody with an interest in the history of entertainment.
