John Clares England Tour (A Coach Trip in Lincolnshire)
"John Clares England Tour" is one of the many fascinating Coach Trips devised and led by the well known Blue Badge Guide Colin Crosby, of Colin Crosby Heritage Tours.
These trips are an enjoyable way of soaking up some Local History.
This one is a tour around parts of England, largely in Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire, that the poet John Clare loved deeply. Many of his poems speak about his love for the countryside, and his regrets that this was all being swept away.
His words speak eloquently to us today, although he lived from 1793 to 1864.
The coach leaves St. Margarets Bus Station in Leicester City Centre at 8am and is expected back at about 8pm.
The unique feature of these excursions is that Colin gives a commentary along the way, bringing the places and subjects to life.
There are three stops, each of about an hour.
Crowland is a small town on the edge of the Fens, where can be found the impressive Crowland Abbey and the intriguing Trinity Bridge.
Helpston is the village where Clare was born and also buried. The John Clare Monument stands in the village street.
Stamford, on the River Welland, is one of the showpiece towns of England, with several outstanding mediaeval churches in its beautiful townscape. Clare's work was first noticed by printers and booksellers here.
The coach also wends its way through several other villages with John Clare connections.
