John Clare Country Tour (A Coach Trip in Cambridgeshire)

The “John Clare Country Tour” is one of the Coach Trips devised and led by Blue Badge Guide Colin Crosby, of Colin Crosby Heritage Tours, as part of his year-round programme.

These trips are an enjoyable way of soaking up some Local History.

This is one of the popular morning trips, which are particularly suitable for people who don’t want to be out for the whole day.

The coach leaves St. Margarets Bus Station in the centre of Leicester at 9.30am, and is due back about 2pm.

The format for these trips is that one stays on the coach almost all the time, while Colin gives a commentary. Halfway round, usually about 11.30am, there is a stop, where tea, coffee, cakes etc can be purchased. This is always somewhere interesting in its own right, such as a garden centre, farm or museum.

This trip is around Leicestershire and Rutland, and into Cambridgeshire, around some of the places associated with John Clare, the peasant poet, who wrote in a way that we can relate to today, mourning the passing of his beloved English countryside.

John Clare was born at Helpston, near Peterborough. Some of the places nearby with Clare associations are Stamford, Burghley, Great Casterton and Pickworth.

He also spent some time further away in London and at an asylum at High Beach in Epping Forest.

The countryside in John Clare Country is very pleasant, moving from the gentle hills of High Leicestershire to the edge of the Fens.
