Epping Forest Tour (A Coach Trip in Essex)
"Epping Forest Tour" is a Coach Trip devised and led by the well-known Leicester-based Blue Badge Guide Colin Crosby, of Colin Crosby Heritage Tours.
Colin's excursions are an enjoyable way of learning some Local History.
The coach leaves from St. Margarets Bus Station in Leicester City Centre.
This is one of the Autumn Colours tours, timed to hopefully take advantage of the season when the leaves on the trees have their beautiful gold and russet hues.
The tour goes into Colin's native county, Essex, which throughout the Middle Ages, apart from a few old towns such as Colchester and Maldon, was almost entirely covered by forest.
Development has severely reduced the amount of forest cover, when in the late 19th century, the last parts of this giant forest were bought by the Corporation of London, to save them for future generations.
Colin will, as usual, be giving a commentary along the way.
There will be three stops, of about an hour, at Chipping Ongar, which has the site of a Norman castle, Epping, from which of course the forest takes its name, and Waltham Abbey, founded by King Harold II, who was defeated at the Battle of Hastings.
There will be an additional stop at Greenstead-juxta-Ongar, which has the famous wooden Saxon church, the only remaining one in England.
Before arriving in Epping Forest, the coach will journey through some of the very attractive Essex villages.
