Cistercian Loughborough (A Guided Walk in Loughborough)
"Cistercian Loughborough" is a Guided Walk on the outskirts of Loughborough, devised and led by Colin Crosby, of Colin Crosby Heritage Tours, the well known Blue Badge Guide.
These walks are an enjoyable way of learning some Local History.
The walk starts outside All Saints Church, Thorpe Acre. This is opposite Thorpe Acre Green, on the corner of Knightthorpe Road and Thorpe Acre Road.
In the Middle Ages, this area was dominated by the important Cistercian foundation of Garendon Abbey, which lasted until the Dissolution of the Monasteries and was replaced by a mansion, now also demolished.
The walk is through some of the places created by the Cistercians.
A little remains of Thorpe Acre village, and there are two mediaeval bridges, the White Bridge and the Stonebow, both used by the monks from the Abbey.
Dishley is where the monks had their grange, being the farm which produced most of their food. Later on, the great Robert Bakewell, famous for his animal breeding methods, lived here.
Other walks in Loughborough led by Colin include "Loughborough", "Thorpe Acre", "Waterside Loughborough" and "The Outwoods".
