Working in Baker Street
Many years ago, I worked very briefly in Baker Street in London.
It was in the early 1970s, when I was working in cinema management in the West End with Classic Cinemas.
I just had to go to the Classic Baker Street for a couple of days, to be in charge while the Manager was away.
In the same general period, I spent a couple of weeks in the offices of Carreras, the cigarette company. I had this period between leaving one employer and starting to work for another, so went to an agency to find some temporary office work.
It turned out that Carreras had bought some new furniture from Sweden, and I had to catalogue it. Not only that, but they didn't know what they had already, so I had to catalogue their existing furniture. It made a huge change, and I therefore quite enjoyed it.
I used to smoke then, so it was very useful to be able to buy cigarettes at a greatly reduced price! This was actually free, but adding the tax levied by the Government.
If anybody reading this has any connection with Baker Street, or Central London in general (Born? Lived? Worked? Ancestors? Relatives?), I will be very pleased to hear from them.
