The Taste of Melton Mowbray
There is a move in Melton Mowbray to use the town’s celebrated foods as a tourism tool to bring more people to this delightful town.
Melton Mowbray is famous, among other things, for its superb hand raised pork pies and Stilton cheese, both of which are unique to the town and nearby villages.
Also made in Melton Mowbray are the very rich hunt cake, and of course another famous local cheese, Red Leicester.
The town, where of course I lead regular Guided Walks, is also famous for St Marys Church, with its cathedral – like proportions, for its market and Cattle Market, and for its pre-eminence as a hunting centre.
Of course, local businesses are right to feel that promoting the local food is a good way to attract visitors.
Some years ago, I devised and led a Guided Walk called “The Taste of Melton Mowbray”, which concentrated exactly on this aspect of the town.
Perhaps I should revive it.
