Legendary Cave Discovered in Rome

A cave important in legends of ancient Rome has been discovered by archaeologists.

According to legend, the twin babies Romulus and Remus were suckled by a she-wolf in her cave, saving them from a certain death. They later went on to found Rome in 753 B. C.

The cave was discovered during restoration work on the Palace of the Emperor Augustus on the Palatine Hill.

It was decorated with mosaics and seashells, and had clearly in the past been the object of great veneration.
