Darlington
Darlington is a large market town and industrial centre in County Durham, 18 miles from Durham.
The early prosperity of the town came from wool. but as this declined so Darlington expanded with its railway engineering businesses.
The elegant St. Cuthbert`s Church was built between 1183 and 1230 for the Bishop of Durham as a collegiate church. It has a beautiful spire.
The Stockton and Darlington Railway is world famous as the world`s first public passenger railway, which started running in 1825.
The Victorian Market Hall is open every day except Sunday.
The "Northern Echo", published in Darlington from 1869. was the first halfpenny paper in England. Its Editor from 1871 to 1880 was the pioneering W. T. Stead.
Darlington was one of the first towns to provide nursery education.
The publisher Joseph Mallaby Dent was born at Darlington.
