Merchant Adventurers Hall (York)
The Merchant Adventurers' Hall is a wonderful old house in the historic city of York.
It can be found in Fossgate, near the bridge over the River Foss, and is entered by a 16th century gateway into a courtyard.
The hall was the Guildhall of the Merchant Adventurers Company of the City of York, which was founded in 1357. Their ships sailed as far as Russia and the Middle East, and their imports brought much propsrity to the city.
There is a Great Hall on the timber-framed first floor, while the stone floor contains an undercroft, occupied by the guild's pensioners until 1900, and a chapel, which today is a popular venue for weddings.
The Merchant Adventurers' Hall has a pleasant garden, and is open to the public.
