Castle Museum (York)
The Castle Museum in York is one of the most popular in England.
Housed in old prison buildings, it is a short stroll across the green from Cliffords Tower, the keep of the castle built by Henry III.
The notorious highwayman Dick Turpin was held prisoner in a cell here before being hanged at the Knavesmire in 1739.
The museum has highly regarded reconstructions of Victorian and Edwardian shops and street scenes.
