Market Place (Whitby)
The Market Place in the Yorkshire seaport and resort of Whitby is a small one, but busy nonetheless.
It is situated in the older part of the town, on the East side of the River Esk in Church Street, below the hill on which stand the great Whitby Abbey and St. Marys Church.
The Market Place was laid out in 1640 by Sir Hugh Cholmley, whose family had purchased the Abbey estate after the Dissolution of the Monasteries during the reign of Henry VIII.
The former site of the market was across the river in Golden Lion Yard.
Beside the Market Place is the Town Hall, built in 1788.
