Captain Cook Memorial Museum (Whitby)
The Captain Cook Memoral Museum is one of many fascinating attractions at the historic Yorkshire port of Whitby.
It is situated in Grape Lane, on the Eastern side of the River Esk.
The museum is housed in a 17th century house, which was home to collier owner Captain John Walker, who took on the 17 year old James Cook as an apprentice in 1746. Cook learned many of his skills, navigational and otherwise, from Walker.
The house has been restored and has artefacts and illustrations from Cook`s epic voyages.
There is also a portrait of a man who served with Cook and became a great navigator in his own right. Unfortunately, he remains unfarly notorious rather than famous, being remembered as the captain of the "Bounty". His name was William Bligh.
