Mersea Mount (West Mersea)

Mersea Mount is an important landmark at West Mersea in Essex.

It is a sizeable Romano British burial mound, 110 feet in diameter and 20 feet high.

When excavated, it revealed a small chamber made of Roman tiles. In the chamber was alead casket containing a glass bowl, within which were the cremated remains of an adult person.

According to local legand, the mound is haunted by a Roman soldier charged with keeping guard.
