Totnes Castle (Totnes)
Totnes Castle is an important castle in the very pleasant Devon town of Totnes.
The castle is situated at the top of the High Street, but easily missed as it is now behind shops and houses.
It was originally built in the 11th century by the Nonant family, and passed in due course to the Zouche family.
There is an impressive 14th century shell keep, which once had a square tower.
After its military use had finished, the castle was used as a prison.
It is now in the care of English Heritage.
