Torre Abbey (Torquay)

Torre Abbey is a historic building at the South Devon resort of Torquay.

It is situated in The King`s Drive.

Torre Abbey was founded as a monastery in 1198, and restoration has revealed undercrofts, loisters and graves.

Much of the present building dates from the 14th century, including an impressive gatehouse.

The Cary family moved in from 1662, and it became their country house. A number of additions were made in the 18th century.

On display are extensive collections of 19th century art. These include a collection of maritime paintings, others by the Pre-Raphaelites and he Thrupp sculpture collection.

The adjacent Spanish Barn acquired its name from having housed Spanish prisoners captured when the Armada attacked England.
