Princess Pier (Torquay)

Princess Pier is one of a dwindling number of English seaside piers, a fascinating and much loved institution.

It is situated on the South Devon coast at Torquay, pointing out into the English Channel.

There is a concete groin leading off at right angles from the Pier Head, and this makes it look a lot less like a conventional pier and more like the walls of a harbour.

The pier was originally built in 1890, and a wooden landing stage was added in 1906. At about the same time, the Islander concert pavilion was constructed at the Pier Head. This was damaged by a fire in 1974 and subsequently demolished.

After a number of engineering works and repairs, the pier reopened in 1979.
