Apprentice House (Styal)

The Apprentice House is an interesting house at Styal in Cheshire.

It was built to house young workers at Quarry Bank Mill.

Young people were brought here from workhouses and orphanages to be trained, in effect working unpaid for up to seven years. Some of the children were as young as seven.

The house could take up to 100 apprentices at any time.

It is now in the hands of the National Trust, and may be visited.
