Lord Burghley`s Hospital (Stamford)
Lord Burghley`s Hospital is a historic set of almshouses in the outstanding old town of Stamford.
It is situated beside the River Welland in the Stamford Baron area across the river from the town centre.
It was endowed in 1597 by Lord Burghley, Elizabeth I`s Lord Treasurer and Scretary of State, for the benefit of thirteen old men.
The hospital incorporates some of the buildings of the 12th century Hospital of St. Thomas and St. John.
An arch of this older building can be seen beside the river and beside the bridge.
