St. Ia`s Church (St. Ives (Cornwall))
St. Ia`s Church is the parish church of the lovely seaside town of St. Ives (Cornwall).
The dedication is unusual, St. Ia being an Irish missionary who sailed to Cornwall, according to the legend, on a leaf and gave her name to the town.
The church was built of local granite in the early 15th century and stands close to the water`s edge. The tower rises to almost 120 feet and is a conspicuous landmark.
The 15th century granite font is situated in a baptistery designed in 1956 by Stephen Dykes Bower.
In the Lady Chapel is a Madonna and Child created by Barbara Hepworth in honour of her son, who was killed in the RAF in 1953.
