Sailors Reading Room (Southwold)
The Sailors Reading Room is a fascinating and unusual feature of the popular coastal town of Southwold in Suffolk.
It can be found on the East Cliff at the end of the narrow street leading from the High Street and Market Place, at the top of the cliffs and overlooking the beach.
It was built, as the title implies, for sailors to read books and in particular newspapers, while they were waiting for the right conditions to set sail.
But it is open to the general public, and contains a wealth of old newspapers and cuttings relating to Southwold and the sea.
There is a panelled roof, four old ship's figureheads and comfortable seats to relax in.
Entry is free, but donations are welcome.
