Southport Pier (Southport)
Southport Pier is one of a dwindling number of English seaside piers, a fascinating and much loved institution.
Situated at Southport and pointing out into the Irish Sea, it is one of the oldest surviving piers, and also one of the longest. Southend Pier is famously the longest of them all.
Southport Pier was designed by James Brunlees, and opened in 1860. Within a few years a railway was added, with waiting and refreshment rooms.
The pier has had the usual set of fires and other disasters, but is still open, with a two car pier tram.
