Southampton Castle (Southampton)

Southampton Castle was an important castle at Southampton in the Norman and mediaeval periods, but there is little left today.

The original castle was built of timber, and was at the centre of the walled town which was stormed by French forces in 1338.

It was repaired by Sir John Arundel and was attacked by the French again in 1377.

Today, the remains include part of the bailey wall, a vault, water gate and Eastern gate, although the town walls largely survive.
