Bargate (Southampton)
The Bargate is a massive city gate in Southampton.
Today it stands incongruously in the middle of a traffic island, but was originally the landward entrance to the mediaeval walled city.
Very imposing indeed, it has 13th century drum towers, and statues of lions which are part of the legend of Sir Bevois and are said to guard the city.
The upper floor was used as the Guildhall, and now houses a museum.
