St. Peter`s Church (Sible Hedingham)

St. Peter`s Church is the parish church of the Essex village of Sible Hedingham.

The church is mainly 14th century, but there is some Norman work.

The West tower is 16th century, but contains a window dating from the 14th century.

A monument in the South aisle is probably a cenotaph for the famous soldier Sir John Hawkwood, born in the village. He is buried at Florence Cathedral, where he is commemorated by a fresco by Paolo Uccello.

Local tradition, however, insists that his body was secretly brought back to Sible Hedingham and buried here.
