Canal Basin (Ripon)
The Canal Basin is an attractive area of the small Yorkshire cathedral city of Ripon.
It is in the Bondgate area of Ripon, across Bondgate Green Bridge over the River Skell. Bondgate was in the Middle Ages a separate settlement from Ripon, but is now clearly part of the city.
The Ripon Canal opened in 1773, and linked Ripon with the River Ure at Bishop Monkton, thus establishing a connection with the rest of Yorkshire and therefore with the rest of England.
The canal itself is very attractive, with trees along the banks, and the buildings around the Canal Basin have an air of Georgian elegance.
Some of the buildings have been converted into shops and business premises.
This is the most Northerly point of England's canal network, which is now largely used for leisure purposes.
