Ripley Castle (Ripley)

Ripley Castle is a historic building at Ripley in North Yorkshire.

It is the castle of the Ingilby family. Thomas Ingilby rescued Edward III from a wild boar in 1355, and was knighted and handsomely rewarded.

The gatehouse survives from around 1450, and the Old Tower was built in 1555. The main house was rebuilt by William Belwood in the late 18th century.

The family`s Catholic faith accounts for a priest hole in the Old Tower.

Oliver Cromwell stayed at the castle on the night before the Battle of Marston Moor.
