Georgian Theatre Royal (Richmond)

The Georgian Theatre Royal is one of the proudest possessions of the romantic old market town of Richmond in Yorkshire.

It stands on the corner of Victoria Road and the pedestrianised Friars Wynd, just outside one of the town's surviving Postern Gates.

The theatre is the oldest in the country to be still working in its original form, and was built by Samuel Butler in 1788.

The theatre runs daily tours, and of course plays are still performed here, in what is a very small auditorium, seating only 186.

An associated museum holds the largest collection of Georgian theatre scenery in England.
